Perfect

This was a trip I didn't see coming. The art is gorgeous, the story compelling, and the setting wonderful. I am hooked.

Gaiman's concoction of a humble and brooding Lord of Dreams as the protagonist is writen so intelligently. The characters he comes across are interesting, and all this with the narrative pacing set just right.

I was way too young the first time I read this but with an older brother around, it was also easy to grab my hands on it but a lot of that passed me by the first time. On this second re-read, I can see the more convoluted story lines in each single issue which feel as single stories with one character connecting them all together.

We meet Morpheus, the Sandman, the Dream King. One of the oldest goods still around and yet a baby brother amongst his siblings which I find endearing. It highlights a family relationship which is further explored through other issues but on this volume, we are introduced to him, his power, his objects and where he's been. Along the way we get to meet a cast of well known faces and names and are introduced to some we will meet later.

Gaiman has always been able to tell a story and here is the start of his longest running story featuring the Endless. I'll be honest that this is dark, a little twisted, a little gritty, and definitely not for kids. There's elements of horror and some very tongue in cheek dark humor that isn't for everyone but something I always enjoyed about his work. Gaiman isn't afraid to explore his worlds through his characters and so I can't wat to keep re-reading this all over again.
