Well written and fast paced biography of a brillant American writer. Son of a schizophrenic. Substance problems throughout his whole life since his teenage years. Prone to depression and manic episodes of rage. Difficulties with faith and religious believes. Misdiagnose (maybe) with ADD. Pain and respiratory issues since his late fifties. And many more obstacles he had to endure. His own messed up body and mind were the most fertile sources of his fiction, more than any of his vast life experiences.

As a creative writer, I can't believe that I'd never heard of Bob Stone, even in passing or in any of my English or creative writing classes. He'd definitely lived a fascinating life, and I love that each of his novels is given time and detail in the book. I think that it was also a more interesting book having been written by another novelist who spent time with Stone and who knew his wife as well. That kind of insider view - still tinged with respect - gave it more insight than if it had been written by someone without that point of view.
