A book group choice. Very much of it's time , nowadays this is a book about a woman being gaslighted but back in it's era I suppose it would be more of a straightforward thriller. It is shocking that just after reading the Yellow Wallpaper, which is set 40 years before this , women could still be scared into silence by the threat of being sectioned. I remember the film well but think it ends differently, I remember the atmosphere of the film but not the specific plot. This type of plot with the main character not being believed always make me slightly anxious so not a high score but I did love the ending.

I would rate this higher if it had been made more clear why the lady vanished and if more detail was given regarding that. I also didn’t care for the ending regarding Iris.

It dragged a little at times — especially since I'd pretty much figured out what was going on and was waiting for our heroine to catch up with me. However, I still liked it a lot. I haven't seen the Hitchcock film based on this book, but will look for it.
