The nephew picked this out to read tonight. It's a Little Golden Classic from the 40s. He seemed to enjoy it. It was cute enough. He gave it 3 stars and I followed suit.

Audience whom written - age 4 - 8

Audience whom appeal - age 4 - 8

Strengths - A story of self-esteem, loneliness and finally foinding a group of people who will accept you as you are. The little elephant meets a number of different jungle animals who make fun of his appearance and offer advice to change himself. This is still a similar theme in many books. The ending has a successful conclusion where he finds a herd of adult elephants who take him in.

Weaknesses - The format itself of a golden book with the cardboard layered cover holds up for personal use but not sturdy enough for library circulation.

Special considerations (artwork, curriculum links, community values, beliefs espoused) -

SLJ format: Your Verdict, supported with details from the book and about your audience.
Verdict: While this is a classic story about self-esteem and self acceptance that still rings true today, the Golden Book format binding is week and is not recommended for repeated use in a library setting.

A very cute Little Golden Book, with a message very similar to the Ugly Duckling. I enjoyed it.
