I enjoyed this story, it was definitely an original concept and I loved the characters. Especially Jenks who was a total scene stealer. The writing was a bit rough in a few spots, but the plot was well developed so that made the few grammar mistakes tolerable. I will try the next in the series.

An urban fantasy with a found family of misfits who walk the line of the law is usually my favorite kind of series.  But I just didn't like the MC.  I had trouble connecting to Rachael because she didn't have a code.  The premise of the story is that she wanted to quit her job, but her reasoning seemed selfish and short-sighted.  There was nothing to indicate she hadn't known in advance what she was getting into, and so the idea that she would just not complete a run and wish it away made me lose respect for her.  There was at least one other time in the story where she went against her own stated principle fairly easily.  I can't get behind a heroine, gray or otherwise, who doesn't stand for anything.  It's too bad because the world was inventive, and most of the characters were delightful.

too much infodumping. Feels like a DnD fan wanting to just infodump every magic item their character has on you. Everything feels clunky/jarring. You barely meet the characters and then everythign's changing and you just don't care.

Fresh take on the genre but I couldn't get over this one thing: am I supposed to think the guy making lifesaving drugs is the evil villain?
He definitely does some other stuff that's clearly bad, but the main thing is the medical drugs. I 100% understand the society's view of that but I don't live in that society. I kept expecting him to turn into a good guy at every turn. It hindered my ability to care or have tension over whether or not they caught him. I hope he gets away so that girl can have cancer treatment!
. Anyway, it made my emotional investment tricky. But neat setting so I may try the next one.
Maybe he DOES turn out to be a good guy?????

First read it March 3, 2009.
The first in The Hollows urban fantasy series, a.k.a., the Rachel Morgan series, set in contemporary Cincinnati.

It amazes me how many different versions of vampires with which people come up. Kim Harrison has created a benevolently (sort of) different world of fantastical creatures.

Read it again...10-24-2010
I'd forgotten how much fun Harrison is. Never a boring millisecond with Rachel Morgan. The world Harrison has created since the Turn is fascinating and I'm always left craving pizza and tomatoes...hmmm She has the most amazing imagination with the twists and turns of her plot. The tricky relationships developing... The various potentials for romance and action... Harrison has developed some fascinating characters and I am sooo looking forward to the next in the series.
