The Zyne Project by Sara Brooke provided us monster-lovers with several of the best ideas in the genre. From the mutating people to the brave heroine, and the evil corporation to the call of hormones when danger is at its peak. The shadiness, the honest researcher, the average-joe schlub, the terrifyingly gruesome deaths! It’s all there…and that’s part of the problem. The Zyne Project quite literally suffers from too much of a good thing.
I love me some monster stories. Everyone who knows me knows that. I can also suspend disbelief to a fairly extreme degree if the story is good enough. But, this book just hit the limit of how far I’m willing to stretch. Mostly, I think, it was the fact that everything happened so quickly that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. It just felt like there wasn’t one cohesive element to the story, and for the simplest thing – the time it takes things to work – to feel off, too, just unfortunately ruined the experience for me.
The Zyne Project reads like a beefed up, more monstrous version of the movie Quarantine (I won’t state how close it comes to actually being like the movie, just that that was my overall impression.) Sara Brooke does, on the individual scenes themselves, a great job writing gore and gross-out, making believable monsters that burn their impressions into your brain, and giving us characters that we can both love and hate – even if they are a bit one-dimensional.
It’s a shame, truly, that there just wasn’t enough to hold the book together. It’s akin to getting the number of the most attractive male or female specimen of your choice, only to realize later that you wrote it down so illegibly that you can’t make out the last 4 numbers at all. The hope, the happiness, the soul-dampening sorrow as the opportunity for a great time slips through your disbelieving fingers.
If you don’t need any realism, and just want a fun, easy read, you’ll definitely be pleased by this book. But if your brain can’t shove away reality for very long, you’re apt to be disappointed, then. Still, give it a try if you’re brave. Might be right up your alley! If nothing else, you may be able to equate it to the book equivalent of a Syfy Sharknado flick.
