How can a book be so clever? Maybe this one was a bit too clever. I can’t imagine the work it took to create such an interwoven mystery. It was rather confusing at some points just because it is a lot to wrap your head around. I did enjoy it though.

I enjoyed probably about 2/3 of this book. The setup was intriguing, there were some excellent and very poetic turns of phrase that stood out to me and it seemed full of cleverly laid out clues and pieces of information that would all come together for the reveal… and while it *technically* did, the closer it got to the end the more it just felt like a convient onslaught of dramatic reveals, plot twists and villain exposition monologues that didn’t feel satisfying after the intrigue of the buildup.
We get a reveal towards the end that
Anna is so evil she’s hated by the entire world,
but with no real explanation of why or what exactly has earned this reputation, it feels hollow and meaningless.
One thing that I’m still disturbed by after finishing the book is the unnecessary hatred with which the author writes about fat people. An overweight character is described with far more revulsion than the many actual murderers and rapists, and we as the reader are beaten over the head again and again with descriptions of how grotesque and vile it is to be overweight with no real plot significance.

Overall, while the writing style itself was enjoyable and easy to get into, I found the premise and set up much more interesting than the payoff.

Well I must say I really enjoyed this. I was a bit unsure when a friend recommended it but oh how wrong I was!

Imagine Agatha Christie mixed with Groundhog Day mixed with a little Sci-Fi and you get The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (not to be confused with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - I mean, spoopy how similar those titles are right?). What cinches this book for me is not only the incredibly carefully thought out plot (Turton is a real human spider to weave all his threads together so well!) but the truly endearing protagonist whose shoulder you ride upon throughout this novel. I love Aidan Bishop - he behaves exactly how I would, makes the same mistakes I would and sticks with his gut even after its changed places 4 or 5 times.

I won't say anymore as I do not wish to spoil this gem of a book. Just read it. Trust me, you won't regret it and if you love murder mysteries, this a delightfully wicked knot you will thrill in trying to unpick.

What a great book to finish and start a year upon!
