I love this book. Read for an English class, but absolutely reignited my interest in Civil Rights-era literature. I'm going to have to pick up more of Baldwin's work.

Thought provoking collection of two essays- this was my first non-fiction work of Baldwin's. I would like to eventually read all of his work. The main essay charts his complicated relationship with religion, including The Nation of Islam and his interactions with Elijah Muhammad. He reflects on the role race plays in society and gives the reader a lot to chew on. I will have to reread this one again as I'm sure there are things missed on the first read.

This is a very lovely memoir - it really speaks to the movement and personal struggles of Baldwin. There is some memorable lines and good prose as well. It was informative and spoke truths for our modern world in 2024 and likely beyond.
