It seems that someone down the street from Jake Samson is building a boat on a vacant lot. They're making a lot of noise late into the night, so ask Jake to go over to tell them to shut down the activity at night. When Jake goes to see them, he learns that they're building an Ark. Their leader, Noah (nee Thomas Gerhart) has received a divine message that a flood is coming, so people need some saving. The same group is also building a second Ark in another location.

But, it seems that the ark builders have problems of their own. Apparently Noah went off with a young woman named Marjorie Burns. They've disappeared and they have rather a large stash of money with them. So, they ask Jake if he could find Noah and Marjorie. Jake goes on the job and gets a spot of assistance now and again from his tenant, Rosie Vincente, who is also a lesbian carpenter.

Well, they check around here and there. Some of Noah's associates — he also has interests in a health food business, Yellow Brick Farms, and in a casino in Tahoe — are ostensibly helpful and some blatantly hostile to Jake. Eventually, someone finds Marjorie dead on the beach.

Things go on, and we eventually get some resolution. Not much helping the situation, is that Jake's father and stepmother, Eva are visiting from Chicago. I don't see evidence that Jake is Jewish, but both his father and step mother speak and act like comedic caricatures of Jewish people.

It was a fun enough book, perhaps 3*+ were GoodReads to allow such.

The story moved along well and I liked the characters. The problem came at the end when the mystery was not resolved by the story action. It took two pages for the detective to explain what had happened and how the chain of events had unfolded. I would read another story with this detective to see if it is better because the writing was fine otherwise.
