The concept was interesting and I was hooked in the beginning. The writing style was just not for me. I can definitely see how people enjoy this book and connect with it though. It’s not a bad book, just not for me. The writing got a little much for me and it was hard to understand what was going on, I started just skimming pages.

This book isn’t like anything else I’ve read in a long time, and I highly recommend it. The writer seems like a fascinating person too, and I plan to seek out more of their work.

If you don’t know anything about Igbo ontology I recommend reading up on it a bit before you read this book, particularly Ala and ogbanje. I paused to do a bit of research about halfway through and found the book resonated more after I had more of an orientation to these concepts.

This is, without a doubt, one of the most original novels I've ever read. In this gripping autobiography Emezi blurs the lines between the events from their life and their emotional journey of dealing with trauma, and accepting their nature as ogbanje.
