This may not be grounded in practical learning to the same degree as some other books about living creatively, but the ideas in this one have resonated with me far more than most of what I’ve read on the subject.

Kudos to Rubin for expressing it all so beautifully.

Very inspiring! And helpful in directing me back to making art again.

Not sure who this book is for but it’s not for me. There may be some good advice for musical artists. It might be good for people who admire art and artists but feel uncreative themselves.
But I found it prescriptive, contradictory, privileged, basic.

The audio version is good for meditating or as a bedtime story with Rubin’s low, soothing voice.

But honestly, there are way better and more actionable books out there that will actually help you out of a slump:

The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron is a classic for anyone suffering from creative block or is at a crossroads in their practice.

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert is wonderful for people who are stuck on the subject of creativity vs fear vs income. An absolute gem of a book.

The War of Art and the modern version Art Is Life by Jerry Saltz if you need a motivational kick in the booty.

This book is full of inspiration and philosophical musing. Although in my day-to-day I’m not a creative, there are so many things he talked about here that apply to my everyday life. I can be creative in so many different ways. I loved his thoughts on collaboration and finishing when everyone is satisfied - no compromises. Similarly, making space for ideas and serving the work, not the ego.

Although I read this in a straight shot, this is something that we put on the bedside table and read a page every night. Or every morning. He has such a great mind, and even with all the wonderful things he’s done, I liked how non-pretentious the book was.

I will always be a creative at heart, especially with my music background, and I’m going to try and apply more of that thinking to my day-to-day.
