Good but took a long time to get through this… has some good lines but I think I liked his interview discussing this book more than the book itself

Okay, I kinda felt like I was being bullshitted at first. But then I reflected upon what was being said and realized there was a lot of truth despite my skepticism. It’s a little odd, definitely not my style of thinking about the world, but I enjoyed challenging myself and would say I’m better and more open/in tune with my creativity now than before.

Great art divides its audience, says Rubin, and it looks like his book did so. I liked it, it reignited a creative flame in me that had been simmering low for some time. It uses concise and effective language to explain Rubin’s perspective on art and life, which illustrates the care he used in composing this book. It’s not a reading book per sé, perhaps more of a ‘open it and see what I get’- kind of book, but I read it in stints of a couple of short chapters at a time and enjoyed the insights each reading gave me. It’s good to read when you have some time to reflect as well.

Yes, it is heavily influenced by Buddhism, and no I would not generally recommend anyone to ignore doctor’s advice based on opening a book on a random page. But practicing openness to what is, is something that resonates with me. Removing ego from art (and life) as well. The book got me drawing again and it has opened me up to ask for feedback from people that I might have avoided getting feedback from before, because: ego. I’ll keep this book within reach when creating, to open randomly and see what insights the Rubinverse has to offer.

this was such an interesting read! i really enjoyed learning about rick rubin’s thoughts on creativity and all his advice for creatives. there was so much helpful information in here and i can tell i will want to go back and reference this book again and again. he talks all about what art is, how to start on your creative journey and how to persevere through difficulties that creators typically go through.
