Surprises at each turn

Starts as a basic novel investigating an abandoned hotel, built by an eccentric hermit, but quickly turns violent. The first murder is startling, but the second is completely out of left field and ultimately introduces the primary villain. I have to scoff at the continuing way the main character keeps changing his story, it was a little trite. And finally I have to say I'd have liked a better explanation for the mutated rats and cat, extra appendages don't just spontaneously occur en masse.

I was not prepared for what this book was, but even more not prepared for what it was not. I started reading this with no more idea of what this book was about then what was written in the Goodreads description. I thought I was stepping into a haunted house/motel sort of story. But no, this was a psychological horror and action adventure in the best way.

This story completely hooked me in. I was slightly disappointed when there was a rational explanation for events but even so, I now want to read more books by David Morrell
