OK, five, because it does what it says on the tin. It's not great SF, not Hugo-Nebula stuff - but it was never meant to be. This book is FUN!

And it's dense; I feel as if I've read a thousand-pager. There's a heap of action, some unexpected plot turns, some character development, and most of all there's the consistency I demand. An author can postulate whatever he/she wants, but then has to play by the rules so given - and Correia does this very well. Each Power has its limitations, and he works well with that.

I particularly like the way he dialled back the Iron Guard. In the previous book one Iron Guard could take on a battalion (although not Sullivan); in this one Toru is very, very good but not as implausibly so as before. Hoover was well done too.

There's a bunch of gory action, but if you don't like that you would have stopped halfway through the previous volume.

The Real Bad Guys are still offstage, but not in an annoying way. We're well set up for book 3 and maybe more.

The Great Big Battle Scene at the end is maybe a little over the top - ripping pillars off the [no spoiler from me]? - but hey, we're not far from graphic-novel X-Men stuff here so I'm OK with it.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I feel it continued a lot of the interesting things from the first book in the series while adding in some important new discoveries and plot threads. There's a lot of great, intense moments. I feel the emotional moments of the book are a little more limited than the first one and mostly consist of awesome action scenes, but that's what the author does really well.

Hardboiled superheroes? I guess that's what this is. Still fun all the same.

What a great book! The Grimnoir are under attack and being framed. A great way to kick off a middle book :)

Faye finds out more about her power. Jake has done more research & experimentation (on himself). A creepy big bad in this one.

I can't wait to listen to the next one!

A great follow-up book. A nice story that has you rooting for the underdog.

It took me awhile to warm up to these characters when I read the first book, but they've really grown on me. I really enjoyed the second book in the series.

This is one of the absolute best book series I’ve ever read, and I’m a prolific reader, especially of series. I adore the characters, the setting, the voice, all of it! I recommend this heartily.

I liked this series a lot more than I expected. Great characters, action packed and original. Horrific cover art.

This is a good book. It’s well written, especially the combat parts which is as one would expect from Larry Correia. However, I have to say that I enjoy his Monster Hunter International series better.

I’m not really a fan of alternate reality stories to begin with so it’s perhaps not surprising that this book series do not please me as much as Correia’s other book series do. It is also much more conspiracies and human foul play in it than in the others which is also something that is not high on my wish list. But then, I do like Larry Correia’s writing in general so this book was a must read for me.

This one is definitely more on the weird plane than his other book series. Well, hunting monsters as in the MHI series is rather weird as well of course but mix that with alternate reality, lots of magic, loads and loads of conspiracies and you get something quite weird.

I have to say that some parts of this book felt, I will not say boring, but at least somewhat slow. I would also say that the first book was in the series more refreshing to read. I think that the main character wasn’t as present as I would have hoped. Sure, the other characters are interesting as well but I just felt it was too chopped up between them. The introduction of the Iron Guard into the team (in a very loose sense of course) was a cool twist though.

I will probably read the next one in the series as well. If nothing else to know how the story progresses. If you ‘re a fan of alternate reality, magic, conspiracies and the 30’s I would recommend this book without hesitation. It’s a good book despite my personal reservations.
