Whelp, that ended super abruptly. Took a bit to get into, but once it got going I was hooked.

Again I needed more out of this. I was bored for a big amount of the time, even with the short lenght of the book. But it had way too many explanations of the way the country works, and I'm not enough into this world to enjoy everything like that.
No real action, just paragraphs of talking and thinking. And the coded messages were too hard to read, and there were too many of them.
What I liked is that Shade appeared

"Rise, red as the dawn."

I'm not going to lie I was worried after reading some not so positive reviews on this novella. I was pleasantly surprised, and it was not as bad as some people made it out to be. I didn't find the operation correspondence distracting, and I think that it adds to the vibe of this book. This is meant to be Farley's story, and part of that is seeing how the Scarlet Guard came to be such a well-organized group. Also, I'm really interested in Shade and Farley's relationship, and I can't wait to see how it may progress in later books in the series. I think it was a good idea to keep it all brief between them during this stage of the series because this is something that can be really explored later on. At least I hope so.

With all that being said, I did think it was a little boring at times. I was really invested and engaged when reading Queen Song, the other novella that goes at the beginning of this series, but I was not always with this one. I think there was just a lot of parts that felt like they dragged on, but mostly everything did feel imperative to the story, so that's why this does have an average rating.
