I really enjoyed this volume! I'm thrilled that the supporting cast is just as strong as the main cast and while I don't necessarily like all of them I do like how they add to the dynamic of the group. Suguro is an interesting character and I like that he's the "I have a goal, I'm super smart and strong" character but he's not analytical or speaks in a monotone voice. Rather, he's short tempered like Rin and super stubborn which is a nice change from the formula. I also like how his friends, Shima and Konekomaru, are there to reign him in and aren't his lackeys. I CANNOT express to you enough how happy that makes me, the whole "school thug who picks fights but has his lackeys with him" is so overdone and the lackeys never get any characterization. In Blue Exorcist, not only are Konekomaru and Shima Suguro's friends, but they went to the same temple as him and are even skilled in their respective fields. Well done, Kato, well done.

Izumo was probably my least favorite character simply because she annoyed the crap out of me, but learning about how she was bullied, seeing her fail her first time in a fight, and watching her rise up from that failure was rewarding. I'm hoping to get more backstory on her and that her character will mellow out over time, but she wasn't terrible.

Quick side note, love the subtle character development on Rin's part when Suguro tries to insult him enough to take him on, but Rin doesn't go along with it. Good job, Rin, I'm so proud of you. P.S. you're so super adorable when you're excited, I can't stand it!

One thing that does bother me in this volume is how quickly the students go from students to exwires in the span a few chapters. I'm sure there's a reason behind it, but it's kind of jarring considering the audience has only just now been introduced to some of these characters. I would have like for there to have been more time to flush out these characters and get to see them grow a little more, but I'm sure Kato has her reasons. Here's hoping, at least.

I like how in this volume we learn more about other characters, even though Rin is still the main focus of the story. Through the different interactions we find out more about the motivations of some of them, such as Bon and Shiemi, and I really like how they inspire each other to do better. Also, I enjoy seeing them slowly starting to trust each other, specially considering they need to learn how to work as a group in case they are attacked.

Completely unrelated to this particular volume but I can't wait to get to Bon's and Kamiki's storylines further into the story, they're two of my favorite characters.

I'm picking up more details now with a second read-through of these, especially after having watched the anime first. The great thing is that I can hear all of the characters in my head as I'm reading, and that always makes it more entertaining for me. I love the character development, as well as the lessons and action that are packed into each volume, and I am definitely eager to see what all differences there are between the manga and anime.

On to the next volume.
