I think this book would be very good for someone who is fresh to this work, however I have been exposed to much of these points prior to reading. The sections that I thought were most interesting were the interview/Q&A style chapters. The most powerful and cohesive lecture style chapter, in my opinion, was Ch. 9 Political Activism and Protest from the 1960s to the Age of Obama. However, the biggest takeaway in the book is the global perspective of how struggles are interrelated and the best way to have the greatest impact is by connecting the dots globally as to how and why these struggles are linked.

One quote that hits home is Davis quoting Assata Shakur, saying “Our young people deserve a future, and I consider it the mandate of my ancestors to be a part of the struggle to ensure that they have one.” As well as Davis’ quote of thinking bigger, thinking longer with “[…] we have to learn how to imagine the future in terms that are not restricted to our own lifetimes.”

Favorite Quote

"Our histories never unfold in isolation. We cannot truly tell what we consider to be our own histories without knowing the other stories. And often we discover that those other stories are actually our own stories." (135)

Positives

I love this book as an introduction to multiple issues and why you should care about Y if you care about X. The themes that struck me the most were Davis’ focus on intersectionality of freedom movements, how the state distorts our perception of freedom movement history, the erasure of collectivism in group movements in favor of a charismatic and symbolic leader, and the manifestation of old systemic issues (slavery) in modern counterparts (prisons). Davis also mentions a number of fellow activists’ books which I think is helpful.

Negatives

The layout of the book as a collection of speeches, interviews, and other texts made it difficult for me to follow topics and themes at times. I know that intersectionality is integral to Davis’ words, but as a reader (with this organization of the book) it was hard for me to follow these themes throughout multiple essays or to hold the different texts distinct in my mind (especially in audiobook format).
