The very real misogyny baked into the Innovations "only beautiful things have value" Academy is terrifying because it is not all that far away from the misogyny we see in our society. My favorite thing about the book is the bond between the girls. They are completely supportive of each other, and that's too rare in YA.

Decent book. Seemed a little slow and repetitive at times.

3.5 stars. Although this story was rather predictable and not the most original, it was enjoyable (in that particular way revolutionary dystopian YA novels have). I liked the “girl power” friend group, the structure of the world, and the connections to both modern feminism AND misinterpretations of modern feminism.

This book reminded me of the independent film Level 17 and Handmaids Tale (although I haven’t read all of the latter). It was well-written and very compelling.

Lent this with Kindle Unlimited, which I paid for, as I found a few books, which I would have bought otherwise (like this one), so the fee for a few months is justified and cheaper than buying the books.
