I wanted to like this book, but it took me a while to get into it. It didn't capture my attention right away, as I could tell this was sort of a whodunnit mystery but it was a slow-moving pace. Overall I really did like the ending! It's bittersweet and resolves itself entirely.
Plot summary:

The Yoo family moved feom Seoul, South Korea to the US for a better life for their daughter Mary. But Mary hated the US, felt alone and alienated from her peers and her parents. Her parents eventually open a HBOT (hyperbaric oxygen treatment) center to help treat all sorts of patients. In this case, the patients are centered around a doctor, Matt, whose wife is obsessed with having a child and claims he's infertile (he's the only adult being treated), Teresa's daughter with cerebral palsy, Kitt's son with autism, and Elizabeth's son, Henry, also with autism. A fire breaks out at the center, which also happens to be on the Yoo's property, and Kitt and Henry both die. Matt's hand becomes deformed, Mary is scarred, and Pak is paralyzed. A trial begins for who set the fire, and all eyes are on Elizabeth. Prosecutors say she intended to kill Henry because she couldn't deal with life as a mother to a child with autism. It was hard and robbed her of herself. The evidence is seemingly staggering against her. The story of the characters plays out, and turns out she's totally innocent. However, she becomes convinced throughout the trial process that she's a terrible mother and she decides to end it all by committing suicide. She drives her lawyer's car off a cliff. Now the real story comes down to Matt. His marriage wasn't great, and he started spending time with Mary who was 16 at the time. On her 17th birthday, he forces himself on her - a misunderstanding/accident on his part, but definitely assault....his wife thinks Mary is basically stalking Matt, so she confronts her and says she's a whore and to leave Matt alone. In a fit of rage, Mary sets the fire by the barn to hopefully make it so that their family can leave this terrible place and go back to Seoul. Her dad had put cigarettes and matches near the oxygen tank to frame some protestors but he put it out just to make it appear to be a stopped fire. She doesn't know this, doesn't know that people were inside, and it's too late when she finds out. The bittersweet part is that her mother convinces her to confess. To help clear her conscious, deal with the consequences of her actions, rather than let it slide and place blame elsewhere just so she can avoid jail time. In the end, the money from Elizabeth's will goes to fund a daycare/camp for special needs and autism kids. So it's a terribly tragic and sad story, but has a somewhat slightly feel-good ending.

This was an amazing debut for the author. Took some very heavy subjects and unfolded then one at a time. Loved the court scenes. The defense attorney’s questioning and questions were so entertaining. Lots of triggers: immigration impact on children and parents (affects them differently), autism, parents of autism, sexual assault, suicide, coma, infertility, infidelity, arson, Asian fetish, and so much more. So beware before you read, but also know it’s great storytelling.

Miracle Creek both fascinated me and disgusted me in a million and a half ways, but at every turn, Kim overturned your expectations of each character. What seemed logically to lead down one path would veer to another, and the end left you feeling vindicated that at last you found the truth. These people drawn together with the best intentions ultimately lead to disaster, and it was difficult to put down. This book will stick with me for a long time.

I’ma little floored after wrapping up this devastating, complex, horrific book. Yet I’m incredibly impressed by the feat accomplished by Kim in telling this detailed, structured, gripping story.

With elements of horror and family drama woven through the intricate threads of Miracle Creek, it goes further than any courtroom thriller could be expected to do. The character’s back stories, family dynamics, motives and claims all come into question and all play out over an emotional four day trial. The book is not for the faint of heart and I did have trouble coming back to it in the beginning, but I felt a commitment to the characters to see it through to the end. Each new peice of information is a clue and the mystery begins to reveal itself along the many intentions, misguided deeds, web of lies, cover ups, and guilty consciousnesses. Each new discovery makes the reader reposition their theories and redirects the jury, making everyone a suspect and truly playing into the spirit of mystery. The execution of this story, though heartbreaking and gory, is brilliantly designed. The focus on pain and suffering, the tragedy and fall out, deaths and injuries caused by the explosion were all focused on the impact on victims and survivors, parents losing children or children losing patents. The seemingly random decisions and actions that compounded down a path to a deadly accident and the chaos and devastation that followed. This book curable certainly left an impact on me, I’ll be thinking about it for a long time to come. Its heaviness will sit with me, as will the strength of Theresa, Young, and many of the women in difficulty situations, the sacrifice of immigrant parents, and the struggles of mothers of disabled children in this story.

It's been years since I've read a courtroom drama, so I was excited to finally pick this up. Miracle Creek is about Miracle Submarine, a treatment center that the owners claim can treat an array of conditions including infertility and autism using hyperbaric oxygenation therapy or HBOT for short. When the HBOT chamber explodes and kills two people, this book turns into a who dunnit very quickly. Told in multiple points of view, this unique courtroom drama shows you the story from all angles while also covering the trial over the course of a few days. It was fun figuring out who did it, but a little bit easy. I'm not sure if it was just easy for me or not, but I had an inkling during the first section of the book of who did it and I was correct. Even with that, though - every chapter was interesting and engaging. There wasn't any filler or nonsense to sift through. I liked the family dynamics that were explored throughout, the good, bad, and absolutely horrifyingly ugly. Every character was interesting even if I found them disgusting - and for the most part, I absolutely did. I do wish that it had been harder for me to figure out and I wish that it had been maybe one section longer, which I know sounds crazy coming from me because I'm always saying in my reviews that I thought a book could've been edited down. I see the irony, believe me!! Overall, this was a solid book and if you like courtroom dramas and complicated family dynamics, you should pick it up.
