The final book is a disappointing end to an otherwise great series. Scalzi writes characters and dialogue with brilliance, but he uses the same tricks too many times. Foiling the antagonists with last minute reveals gets old when it comes up again and again. This might have worked better as two tighter books or even one long one instead. Regardless, the characters are enough to make it interesting to the end.

So far this is only the 4th of Mr. Scalzi's work I've dug into. I wanted more weird. I got more safe.

Welp, there was a lot to wrap up here (have I mentioned the potential end of the human race, or at least everyone in a vast interstellar empire?). This trilogy was decisively concluded here, which I always appreciate. Without getting spoilery, some aspects of that conclusion are more satisfying than others, but all of them were internally consistent.

I was wondering if Scalzi could land this series and the answer is, yes, very much so.

Some absolutely great moments.
Spoiler "Bitch, you're in my seat." Of course. But also the casual saunter into assassinating his main character. Memorable in the almost trivial way he just slides it in there.
. Had a great time reading this series

This book picked up for me as it went along, and the ending caught me by surprise. An enjoyable series but I am glad it has ended.
