4.68/5 - [Spectacular]
Summary: Eskarina Smith longs to be a wizard. She has the talent, the nerve, and the humorous support of her dear not-blood-related witch Granny Weatherwax. The only problem is there has never been a female wizard before and the gatekeepers of Unseen University seem to want to keep things that way.
Review:
I started this book in 2016 and I fell in love instantly. It took four years to finally finish my reading of this (and I've reread multiple chapters of this book).
It was worth the wait.
The Discworld series is expansive and deep and hilarious. But as one of Pratchett's earliest book in the series, Equal Rites is extremely approachable. It's a fantastical, whimsical world grounded by a sense of humor that I've found more subtle than Douglas Adams' works. There's a delicious quality to descriptions of the Ankh-Morpork, Badass and the locales Esk visits along her journey and I get the sense that a tremendous love was put into writing this book in particular.
A great entry point into the series that leaves the reader astounded at how ahead of the times the author was and inevitably wanting more of the Discworld Universe.
