I love the Discworld series. I like science well enough. However, for a book that claimed that gods are fantasies that people insist on believing and religion just a way to control the people's minds, there was quite a lot of preaching. The scientific chapters went on and on about scientific principles that I, with only a high school science education could barely understand. The Discworld chapters were the only reason I kept reading this book instead of dropping it. Even then, the characters seemed more like avatars to carry a message rather than characters in a story. Even the main Discworld characters seemed unimportant to the true message: Science is the way forward for mankind, turn away from religion or at least from belief in things that have no physical, rational or logical existence. At least, in my opinion, that seemed to be the message.

I had to finish the series out of need to finish the set, but I wouldn't say they were really good. The science is very high level and sometimes a bit over my head (especially the particle physics). I enjoyed the discussion in this one about belief as I share Terry's lack of religious belief and the Discworld chapters were as always quite hilarious.

Much science that I do not grasp but still fascinating to listen to. The discworld story is lovely as always and i do wish we had more of it!

This series is without doubt among the best pop science books ever written. So entertaining, so witty and so straightforward in their descriptions and and examples. Rather than write an individual review for each of this series I'm making an omnibus one for all. These books tread much the same ground as Bryson's a short history of Nearly everything, Harraria's Sapiens, Dawkins Blind watchmaker and Mt improbable and many, many more.

In a way I wish they were titled differently, much as with their ongoing jibe at Darwin's 'Decent of man' the title 'The Science of' turns off more readers than it attracts which is to my mind at least, a tragedy.

One of only two books and a few short stories in the series I hadn't read prior to this complete reread started in September 2020.
