This second installment of Elizabeth Haydon's "Symphony of Ages" trilogy sags beneath a go-nowhere plot, over-sentimental, sobby characters, a romance I couldn't care less about, and useless passages of description. Here's hoping the third book, "Destiny", returns to the spontaneous, fun storytelling and amusing characters of the first book, "Rhapsody".

Waaay too much romancey sex and feelings. I'm not sure that the endless descriptions of 'love' added anything to the story.

I had a harder time getting into this one than the first, but I enjoyed the storie just as much by the end. I like the character development of Rhapsody, Achmed, and Grunthor.

For half of this book, I thought there was no way I could love this as much as the first book. Of course I was wrong and those last 150-200 pages I COULD NOT PUT DOWN.

I have come to the conclusion that Elizabeth Haydon is a genius.

Throughout the first book and continuing into the second, nothing was rushed everything seemed to happen naturally. Or as naturally as the impending, ultimate doom of the world can. Though there were times that I was screaming at the characters to just "freakin' tell each other everything because it would solve so many questions and issues right there", I applaud Haydon for holding on to secrets until the time was right. Not surprisingly, she knew what she was doing and some of my favorite scenes came from her precise story-planning.

*cue squealing into my hand so I don't type spoilers but man oh man do I want to because this entire book is a spoiler*

Without giving anything away, this sequel got darker, more steamy, and so much more powerful. I have a greater respect for Rhapsody and all the other characters now after reading this book, and I can’t wait to read the epic conclusion!

Now that the three have arrived and have taken over the Bolglands Rhapsody goes on a quest to return a dagger made from a the claw of the dragon Elynsynos that was found in an old vault in Ylorc to protect the Bolg from the dragons vengeance once she senses it moving about the world again. Ashe offers to escort her as he's been to her lands before. Rhapsody goes on several quests after meeting and befriending the dragon and along the way she and Ashe become good friends once he takes her to one of the few places where he can walk freely under the sun instead of constantly hiding behind his cloak of mist and she see's the damage that's been done to him.
This is a little more action packed than book 1 but the author is still very wordy, but at this point I also feel more for the characters and am willing to overlook the unnecessarily overly descriptive stuff, think of Tolkien's obsession with scenery as an example.

Elizabeth Haydon truly never fails to stun me. I am so in love with the characters that she's created and this incredible, but dangerous, world they've found themselves in. I could not sing Elizabeth Haydon's praises harder if I TRIED. Please, do yourself a favor if you're reading this and TRY this series.

3.5 Stars.
What I liked about this book I loved. Sadly, what I didn't like about this book...I really didn't like.
I loved the worldbuilding, the in-depth cultures, history, magic systems, unique races, and for the most part the ongoing story and characters. Unfortunately, the romantic relationship in this book really didn't work for me. Which was the main focus of nearly 200 solid pages! Don't get me wrong, I love a little romance, but I don't need to sit with it for chapters on end.

**Spoilers***

I really had trouble buying Rhapsody and Ashe's "true love" story when her chemistry with Achmed was much more compelling. But I'm biased as I'm Team Achmed.

I loved the first book so much I will still continue on.

I liked this book! Not as much as the first one, but enough that I want to keep reading the series! I get that Rhapsody is perfect though, you don't have to tell me anymore. Ever. I got it. =P
