This is a memoir written by the secret service agent in charge of Jacqueline Kennedy’s security during her years in the White House. Up until their arrival in Dallas, I alternated between being charmed by their rapport and Jackie’s mischievous persona, and appalled by how spoiled and privileged she was. Young, beautiful, rich, and fêted by royalty around the world, she had only to say what she wanted, no matter how frivolous it was, to have it happen.

But once the story turns to Hill’s painfully detailed account of what happened on November 22, 1963, all else pales beside the agony of that day. What a horrible tragedy. I was two in ‘63, so I don’t remember it, but JFK’s assassination was one of the most significant public events of my childhood. It was a story so often retold that it almost feels like I do remember it.

For the record, there is no discussion of JFK’s dalliances with other women, and only a few vague allusions to politics. This is Jackie’s story, as told through the eyes of someone who was with her nearly every day. It’s clearly biased in her favor, but it’s still interesting.

The first three quarters of this book is just a shitty reminder of how much different life is for rich people. I enjoyed reading about Clint and learning a bit about what secret service life is like, but the details of Mrs. Kennedy's life of luxury were tedious at best and infuriating at worst (not her fault, but still wildly unrelatable). Then there's the end which is brutal and graphic.

Mrs. Kennedy and Me started slowly, but I really enjoyed reading about how Jacqueline Kennedy impacted her husband's presidency, and also the world through the eyes of her secret service agent, Clint Hill.  The last portion of the book detailing the assignation of the president was heartbreaking.

A fantastic and captivating memoir. Clint Hill’s writing style is direct and blunt, which means you know he was great as a Secret Service Agent. He describes both beautiful and memorable vacations in Greece and Italy and Rome and the horrible trauma of JFK’s assassination with the same amount of grace and attention to detail.
