Kind of slow, kind of okay.

Frankly, had to force myself to finish this one. Lot of uncomfortable focus on the teenage daughter’s body, unnecessarily descriptive sex scenes, and it seemed that every other chapter gave me at least one instance of “ick”, and not in the way I’m looking for when reading a thriller. Characters often seemingly overreact to any event taking place. Maybe I just ‘didn’t get it’, but overall, not for me.

I just did not vibe with this book. It felt as thought nothing really happened and I found the ending thoroughly unsatisfying. Also the descriptive nature of some scenes made me feel physically ill… for no reason that served the plot or my investment into the book.

Really liked the first half and there were some really spot-on insights into career, marriage, parenting, middle-age, middle-class lifestyles. However, I did not like the ending (or non-ending) at all. I felt like the book was trying to be clever and creative and apocalyptic but just fell flat in the end.

What did I just read? This is somehow both the best and the worst time to read an impending apocalypse book. The story is a slow burn and the anticipation is incredible, and I will be thinking about this story for a long time.

Amazing writing and detail, I was fully invested in the lives and outcomes of the characters, but the ending was so very disappointing and painfully inconclusive

The plot drives the book. Unfortunately, the plot is unrealized. There is random sexual imagery that is out of place. By the end I wasn't rooting for any of them.
