mmmmm a disappointment.

I didn't realise until now how much I valued Ferrante's anonymity. Her fiction writing is so stellar and I derived so much meaning from the Neapolitan series, that I really didn't need a collection of essays to gain any deeper insight or meaning into the Ferrante psyche- I wish I hadn't peaked behind the curtain.
It made me uncomfortable to experience Ferrante in such a modern format when her fiction writing does so much to transport you to 1950s Naples- it was jarring to hear progressive rhetoric.

No more non-fiction Ferrante for me.

As with all short essay collections some resonated more than others. I particularly liked Ellipses, the deluge of news, happy childhood & creative freedom. This is a woman who owns her double standards.

What I felt after reading this book?
I loved the ease of reading and the simplicity of the topics in the book. The essays were short and reflective. Not all the topics resonated, but I bookmarked a few to return to again.

During the early days when I started my own blog, I was constantly bugged fearful of my writing's worth, constantly worried that it is merely incoherent spoiled ranting of a child. Thus it is coincidentally meaningful that this collection of short reflections has assured me that this anxiety is inextricably part of the pleasure of writing itself. Much needed solace and encouragement for me to continue writing on in the upcoming new year.
