Carina is headed to work on a typical day when the transport carrying her and her co-workers is attacked. They are all taken prisoner, though, for some reason, Carina isn't put in the cells with the other prisoners. Instead, the soldier who captured her informs her that she will be his captive in some kind of captive-integration program while her planet and their planet negotiate the return of the hostages. Though Ram, the soldier who captured Carina and is now watching over her on board the Varusian ship, is about as forthcoming as a brick wall with details, apparently Varus and her home planet of Seutura are at war.

Though relatively predictable as far as YA romances go, I did enjoy the world-building in this book. Yes, the majority of the book took place on board the Varusian ship in Seuturan orbit, but we still learned quite a bit about life on Seutura during the first chapter and through some dialogue that Carina has with other captives. We also get quite a bit of information on Varus, as well. While we don't get a whole lot of information on the conflict between the two planets until later on in the book, that seems to be because Ram isn't forthcoming with information about it and Carina has lived her entire life in an isolated mining town that is relatively far from the capital city. In addition, I inferred from the information given about Seuturan life that their government is very closed-lipped about things and would have made sure the general population didn't hear about some things - many things.

Anyway, aside from that (and I suspect we'll get more information in later books, as this one seems like a setup to a series, though it is a complete novel without a cliffhanger), I really enjoyed reading this book. As soon as I finished it, I immediately signed up for the author's newsletter to get the novella mentioned at the end of the book.

If you like YA romances, you'll likely enjoy this one. Some trigger warnings to be aware of: it does have some mild violence, and there is mention of sexual assault that occurs off-scene.
