The book opens up with Bobby holding his 11-day-old daughter (Feather) as he ponders how wonderful it would be if we could “live life backwards and do the first part last” to end life being held in our parents’ arms the same way. The book paints a realistic outlook of what becoming a teen parent looks like as it flashes back and forth from ‘now’ and ‘then.’ You quickly realize that his girlfriend/Feather’s mother (Nia) isn’t in the picture, and the how and why is an unexpected gut punch when it’s revealed. This was a short but powerful read that aged well and felt like poetry. I highly recommend the audiobook version.

My opinion of this book is influenced by the fact that I read the majority of it with my two-month-old lying on my stomach.
But, the first chapter is one of the best first chapters I've ever read. Beautiful, beautiful writing. Bobby is an incredibly refreshing character, a teenager who is trying to do the right thing, no matter what it costs him, trying to be responsible, and doing a pretty darn good job of it.
The tenderness behind the title is an image that will be sticking with me for a long time.

I really loved this book, the way it was written in Bobby's point of view all except for one part, and the way in went from Now to Then and back again.
