Very similar to Jurassic Park in its set up. Obviously there's dinosaurs, but also strangley the formula of a bunch a men on an island along with one female scientist and two children, who experience one dino mishap after another.

Despite the fact that this is basically a rehash of the first book, it is still a thrilling adventure that I could not get enough of. Full of suspense and just enough science to make a good science fiction novel, this is quite the page turner.

Both the books in the series made me think "wow, this sounds awesome, I'd like to go through that in a videogame." That feeling was even stronger with the second book, because exploring a strange island with strange fauna sounds great.

One point off because it wasn't as good as the first one; another point off because it was way too dragged out. Scott Brick is a good narrator, but the narration was very slow and needed a big speed boost.

Ура!!!!!! Я прочитал это... (ни одно приличное слово на ум не приходит).

И на этом я прощаюсь с [a:Michael Crichton|5194|Michael Crichton|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1359042651p2/5194.jpg]. Сюжетные идеи у этого автора оригинальные, но вот писатель из него никакой!!!!!!!!

3.5/5 stars

Plot:
It took a while to build up in the beginning and was more mathematically based than the first one. Honestly was a bit boring, but got better with some action at the end. Malcolm was doing his usual "I'm hurt so I will lay around" while Dr. Sarah Harding kicked butt like a queen.

Characters:
Sarah and Malcolm were definitely my favorites. There were a lot of side characters whose names I couldn't keep straight.

Writing:
Slow in the beginning, still sorta slow at the end.

Folio Society edition. While not at the same level as the first Jurassic Park novel, this is still a lot of fun, plenty of action and theorising on extinction, and the return of some characters. Rips along at a fast pace.

WOW. No! Guys, save yourselves and leave The Lost World lost. It was a crappy, sloppy reiteration of Jurassic Park. Crichton wrote this to pacify publishers and so Hollywood could make another movie.

Let's see... Where to begin? The characters were weak and undeveloped. They were all genius types who just spouted science-y things and each conversation ended with "I've figured it all out! ..." Then the character is cut off or distracted and we never figure out what they figured out. Every single character could've been devoured by dinosaurs and it would've improved the novel by 100000%.
AND in no uncertain terms did it state that Ian Malcolm DIED at the end of Jurassic Park. Then he is miraculously not dead? Then somehow he is talked into going back to a dinosaur infested island? He's a mathematician! Why is he studying dinosaurs? He wasn't the same character that he was in the first book. But I guess that's what happens when you are killed and then resurrected without an explanation.

Another thing that drove me bonkers was the contradictions between Jurassic Park and The Lost World. They would state something in Jurassic Park and then contradict the statement in The Lost World.

It was slow to get going. The first 250 pages were just scientific speculations about the dinosaurs that never had any resolution. So BORING! Then the rest were filled with dinosaur attacks that were blatantly hokey. There was nothing thrilling about this thriller.

Over all, not a bad book. The story is a bit weaker than the original book, but the characters a bit better. The book still doesn't seem to know what to do with a female character, making her (because of course there's only one grown ass woman in the book) alternate between the damsel in distress and the hero of the day. It added two kids in place of an IT guy for no other reason than to add drama, and it showed--at least the girl in this duo had value, the girl from the first one was just there to check a diversity box (female: check). They offered much needed computer help, but I find it hard to believe that, emergency mission or not, people who don't know how to use computers would take computer-guided equipment with them without bringing a proper computer person. It was a hackneyed reason to get kids in there to put them in danger.

Anyhoo, I yelled at this book a lot, but I also kept listening to it (yup, audio) when I could have moved on to something else, so it's not a completely horrible book, it's just annoying at times.

I enjoyed Jurassic Park, but had heard this book did not live up to it's predecessor. It actually exceeded my expectations, but my expectations were very low, so ... Three stars it was.

The Lost World had many of the same aspects that made the first book enjoyable for me--the tension was well done but not too much for me (I'm a wimp when it comes to scary books), there were interesting science discussions that were easily understandable as a science layman, and I loved the way the characters had to be solving a new problem constantly.

The reason I gave it a lower rating was that while it was enjoyable overall, the plot felt contrived. It was an almost complete repeat of Jurassic Park's plot. There were many very predictable aspects and a lot was left unexplained. The ending felt rushed and was very unsatisfying for me.

Overall, if you enjoyed Jurassic Park, you'll probably enjoy this as well, just know it's not quite as well done.

Content: More swearing than the first (including many instances of the f word); Obviously violence, with the dinosaur attacks (it could be gruesome at times, taking about things like body parts coming off, but the book didn't focus on it and there weren't long descriptions of the violence).
