This book was really good, it wasn’t quite as powerful as The Hate U Give, but it was still excellently dome and presents a really great message.

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas is about a wannabe rapper named Bri who is in a rough situation, bussed to a school in the city, she is harassed by school security officers, this begins a chain of events that makes Bri question what she wants the world to see her as and who she really is.

The audiobook for this book is the way you should read it because I know if I tried to rap those lines...It wouldn’t go well. However, lyrically there are so many things that I have to praise about this book. When you put the pieces together of Bri’s life, she is so multifaceted. She likes a guy, she loves her drug-dealing aunt, she wants to be loyal, she wants to be famous, but she also wants to be herself. It was so refreshing to read about a black girl who was not a trope or a stereotype.

The struggle all of the people in those areas deal with is never talked about. A series of unfortunate events makes it extremely hard for Bri’s mother to make ends meet. It showed the other side of the struggle. How you can do everything right and change your life for the better and things still not go the way you planned.

As for the central conflict, Bri brings a lot of it on herself. She is extremely quick to anger, popping off without forethought or cognizance of what the consequences will be for her actions. In that way, she is like a normal teenager, but the book is quick to point out that the rules are different for her. Because they are.

At first, I didn’t want to read this. I found myself shying away from it because it deals with some heavy issues. But at the end of the day, even though Bri is one of the most annoying characters I have ever read...ever. I can appreciate this book for all that it is. It’s a masterpiece.

This was FANTASTIC on audio!! I don't know that I would have been able to fully appreciate reading the rap battles, but hearing them was great. The story of an inner-city, fatherless girl struggling on the edge of poverty has really stuck with me

This was great. I love a flawed MC, especially when they grow in response to the mistakes they make. This book is full of love, hope, and grappling with the everyday reality many folks aren't all that willing to talk about. There are real world consequences to choices, but we continue past those and working towards a better future, and that'll get me every time.

Content/trigger warnings for police brutality, racism, drugs/drug abuse, child abandonment, and gangs.
