Maybe this book is brilliant. I'm not sure. I'm too exhausted from living in pandemic world to tell. Maybe I would have loved this book from the vantage point of one of my university lit classes, chased with a good wine and cheese department party, but from my current context I just honestly couldn't figure out what was going on in this book. I hate to say I didn't get it but I didn't get it and gave up a little over halfway through. There were a few moments in there where I got this inkling of something strange and haunted and I wanted to keep reading but then the moment would pass and I flipped pages without really reading them to see if maybe I was missing something. I clearly need something fluffier these days.

This book left me scratching my head on how I should review it.

On the one hand: there are 3-4 of these little vignettes of spookiness that really stuck with me and are some of the finest examples of horror done in the most subtle of ways — Billy Byron, At The Foot of The Bed, Sirena De Gali, Alcatraz, Être Chez Soi, and The Couple

The rest of them seemed a little too ‘modern art’ for me and were too abstract. Maybe I wasn’t in the right mindset or didn’t spend enough time with them.

Overall the book is a solid 2.5-3 stars but those stories I listed would make it a 5 star experience if the others were more like those.

Super unique book. Not for everyone. Certainly not entirely for me, but that’s okay too. Worth checking out!

This was fantastic and atmospheric. I love a good mixed media kind of book, and this was creepy and really well done. I enjoyed it all so much.

I really like this book in theory, as a collection of eerie vignettes that explore different hauntings through photos and ephemera. But while it’s enjoyably creepy, eventually the hints and suggestions of ghosts fell short for me. It makes sense in a way that the specters feel just out of reach, but the sections where the images were paired with text on a different topic just felt annoying rather than deep. Ultimately the promise of Guestbook just didn’t manifest for me.

An interesting concept read, that would be an understandable struggle for cataloging librarians. I recommend this for people who do not require a linear read.

A very strange book, and I have to admit that I understood very little of it. What I did get, though, was beautiful and haunting. Something tells me this will linger with me for a while.
