Oh, this book! This book is not easy to explain... There is a mystery, a case that involves a woman who hasn't been seen for many years. But it also, and in my opinion, mainly, a character study of John Watson.

The John Watson we meet here isn't like any other, but not only because he can see ghosts. He is more closed-up, he's still very much in pain from his injuries, and, although he is, in his own words, ridiculously in love with Sherlock, he is not okay, not really.

While they are in York, investigating the case that, accordingly to Sherlock, they weren't investigating, John keeps remembering moments of his past. Some of them are funny (best first meeting ever), some are poignant, some are sad. But as the story advance, we get to know this John, this John who loves and who is loved; who was afraid of his 'gift' since he was a child but can't deny it. And we get to see these two men in a moment of definition, and we see them acting as mature adults, talking to each other, even when both of them find it difficult.

But I think that what got me completely hooked was Greta. We only knew her through her flat, her journals and her drawings, and yet she comes alive through the pages of the book. It's a wonderful character, and I really enjoyed the resolution of her case :P

If you like a story with a sense of melancholy, but with also a great deal of love, and a gentle mystery, this is for you. I know that I am hoping for more stories from G. V. Pearce in the future.
