I really like the point that the concept of punishment needs to be rethought and restructured since it’s currently based on free will actually existing. I also like the point that people are essentially “lucky” in how their lack of free will manifests; it was also interesting how he said that liberals believe in some “luck” and life placement but the religious backbone of conservatives is fully reliant on religious free will. Interested to read more about the religious concepts!

Definitely poses some serious problems for the notion of free will. We are slaves to our neurology. When you dig deep, you really don't know what made you decide to do what you do. It always leads to a dead end, which is your brain chemistry, which is designed by your genes and your development, both of which you did not control. I do agree with this, I just don't yet know what to do with this information. I'm not yet ready to write assholes off as being victims, but for now it gives me a little more peace in that I see them as less conniving than I thought before.

This book will definitely make you stop and think. Sam Harris is very good at weaving together the ideas of free will, religion, morality, and justice. He takes the scary notion of "no free will" and breaks it down into the inevitability of the universe and the limits of our own biology. I used to think of free will as an absolute truth, and now I see that it really is an illusion. I highly recommend this short read.

Just wanted to make sure that I never have any control over my shitty fate and absurd actions before this year ends.
