dark fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated

The reviews for this book are harsh. It was the first book Laura ever wrote - it’s bound to not be perfect. I love her stories and am sure the series will get better and better as it continues.

I really wanted to hate this book. There were a lot of aspects that just bother me to my core, and yet I still enjoyed the book. The romance in this book was just not for me. I found it unsettling how controlling he was. I do not understand why this is a trend in books lately. He's super controlling and pretty, I must love him! Bleh. I got tired of hearing about how pretty both Andre and Gabrielle were. Give me some substance.

Aside from my pet peeves with this book, I found the concept interesting. I liked the dual supernatural powers raging within Gabrielle, but thought a third power was just a bit much. I've gone ahead and downloaded the second book, so I'm sure I'll be reading it soon.

3.5 ⭐️

The first few chapters you can really see this is a first book. It felt like it was written like a kids fantasy book. Really fast paced, quick friendships based on nothing. The book itself is not that special. The characters don’t have much depth and the friendships are established in chapter one and that was that. It all focuses on one main thing, that is interesting enough that I kept reading.

It’s a fairly small book and therefore I read it fast. I will pick up book two and I hope it will have some more depth since I love her new books and hope it will pick up.

I've never tried to write a review but this book blew my mind so I just had to.

When I was picking out books by Laura Thalasa, my main focus was The Vanishing Girl (which I also loved) but then The Unearthly caught my eye because of the beautiful cover. So I got it without even reading the synopsis (I judged the book by its cover). It was probably months later when I got around to reading it and I'll admit, I thought it was a bit too cliché - an orphan girl with no memory of her past life, foster homes, the mysterious man in the suit and a school for supernaturals.

"Seriously Gabrielle? Look who you're talking to - I'm a gay fairy. I'm the world's biggest cliché."

But once you get over all these things that total up to world's biggest cliché, you find that The Unearthly is a breath of fresh air in the world of YA books were girl meets boy, girl and boy fall in love, girl and boy saves the world, and they live happily ever after. (Okay so maybe there is a bit of that).

Gabrielle Fiori is my new favourite heroine. She's not a badass like Rose Hathaway nor is she a damsel in distress like Bella Swan. She was refreshing because she is a blend of both these characters. She doesn't go straight into the face of danger with a blind eye (with an exception of a few times) but she also doesn't wait for her knight in shining armour to save her.

Speaking of knights - Andre de Freaking Hotshot Leon. Now who wouldn't want a piece of that vampire king. When Andre is first introduced to the story, he's the hero we see in every book. A self assured, egotistical sexy beast. Let me just point out that despite all this, I fell from him the first time he was mentioned.

"Who's Andre de Leon?" I was two steps behind everyone else. I swear I must have missed the email.

"She did not just say that," Oliver said.

Damn boi, you can go all caveman and throw me over your shoulder anytime. As the story proceeds you find out more about the sexy vampire king. Conclussion: move over Adrian Ivashkov, there's a new vampire in town!

All in all, this book is a must read. The characters are amazing. It had me laughing (especially by our gay fairy friend) and it rekindled my love for vampires. My faith in the supernaturals has been restored!

This was pretty unrealistic as far as fantasy goes. Not the supernatural part, but the girl's reaction to the supernatural. "Oh, I'm not human? That's cool. I won't doubt it at all. This guy's older than the U.S.? Sure, that's fine."

This was very fast paced and didn't have a dull page let alone chapter.

Some of the chapters were written in the third person which i always love. I find it so limiting when its just the main characters point of view and it ends up feeling like your reading a diary instead of a book.

Gabrielle acts way beyond her 16 years but I think it's for the best as know one wants a whiny immature heroine especially an immortal one.

I thought Oliver was a great addition, I could imagine his flamboyant personality easily.

All this and it's solid plot line I'll definitely be continuing with the next book.

Oh boy. I don't even know how to rate this.

This book is flawed in so many ways. From the very beginning it felt like a two-star to me. The main problem is that everything is so rushed: the plot, the romance, the world building...nothing is explained and everything happens ridiculously fast. And on top of that the story is filled with plot holes, tropes and character cliches. I almost feel like I have nothing good to say about this book.

Despite all that, I kinda liked it.

I know. Weird.

I could go into all the reason why I didn't like it, but honestly I can't be bothered. The simple truth is that this is not a good story per se, but it can still be enjoyable if you're in the right mood. It is a light, quick and easy read. I am also aware that I'm about ten years past the age of the target audience, so giving it less than three stars would be a kinda shitty thing to do. I'm sure I would have liked it better if I was seventeen.

On a final note: reading this was an attempt at filling the void Laura Thalassa has left in my heart as I await the next book in the Four Horsemen-series. The Unearthly was her debut, and I am pleased to see how far she has come as a writer since then. Now, give me Famine before I go crazy!

Probably closer to 2.5, but I'll give it 3, because I was entertained.

I love when stories have supernatural creatures, and I really love supernatural boarding schools. I know they're over done and usually not done with the best writing, but it's a guilty pleasure of mine. I love the unnecessary drama and ridiculousness of it. So this book gets 3 stars from entertainment alone.

Characters. I did not like almost all of them. Gabrielle was really annoying and something about her just bugged me. I feel like she tried to seem superior to people and her attitude was annoying. This was the same way I felt about Angel in another one of Laura's books. But at least Gabrielle has more of an excuse as she's a teenager. Andre was interesting, but such a classic 'macho' guy. I wish we saw a softer side of him. Also his ending made him seem a bit unhinged. Side characters were meh, and I feel like we didn't really get a feel for them.

Oh insta love, when will you be stopped? It actually wasn't too bad in this, but alas, it was there.

The writing... it just was not great. There wasn't anything bad about it, but... I don't know. I find that, except with The Bargainer series, I don't like the way Laura write her characters and their conversations. They seem so fake, immature, and just annoying.

The plot. It could have been really interesting, but as it felt contrived it fell short. However I am a sucker for vampires (pun intended) and supernatural schools as mentioned before, so it kept me invested. That being said, everything was pretty obvious. The 'killer' going after he, not shocking who it was. All the supposed twists, were not very twisty.

Also this just drives me insane. WHY DOES THE GIRL ON THE COVER NOT LOOK LIKE THE MAIN CHARACTER?!? Did the people who made this book cover read it first? Apparently not.

I'd recommend this if you're looking for a short book, that isn't the best, but it's classic drama and supernatural high school.
