This story caught me by surprise. I was not expecting a book about a half giant and a girl running from a plague that turns them into zombie like creatures but is only affecting their village and nowhere else. A twisted tale of disguise, deceit and caring for others.

An easy read with many a twist involved, an ending that will catch you by surprise and pain but love spread throughout along the way. The characters grow with the passing of time and you can see them through different eyes as the tale flits from Miriam to Devoniare's points of view. I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt myself being sucked in to see the world in a different way.

I enjoyed the extra short stories as well, they link closely to his other books, including an excerpt from a treatise of blood and iron. Still highly enjoyable on their own.
