Written truly from the points of view of two confused teenagers (complete with "I'm not gay there's nothing wrong with me why would you think that" attitudes) and so heart wrenchingly honest that I now know what it is to fall in love for the first time even though it's never happened. A bittersweet journey from beginning to end.

A Kiss in the Dark was a beautiful book. It starts off with a massive twist in the storyline and from then on you are on the edge of your seat. As of halfway through, the narrator changes from Alex to Kate. From then on I found it hard to decide who's side to be on because both of the characters make horrific decisions. The story is very deep because it includes the characters having to find themselves in a place that they don't know who they are. It is one of those books where you wish you could rip the characters out of the book, just to yell at them and tell them what to do and how badly they are handling the situation. This is the third Cat Clarke book that I have read and at the moment it is my favourite.

I still really enjoy this book but a reread shows that the ending is abrupt and the overall book is slightly lacking. I feel like instead of one half from each point of view alternating chapters might have flowed better.

I really wanted to love this but unfortunately I just... didn't. I thought it dealt with LGBTQ issues clumsily (trans people are all deceitful and lie about their gender!) and it was really not satisfying. I enjoyed aspects of this book especially the fact it's set in Edinburgh where I'm from but I don't think it handled sensitive issues with enough nuance.

YA so not my usual read but my daughter insisted I read it and I really enjoyed it. It perfectly captures the universal feelings of teenage first love with an interesting (if not perhaps a tiny bit problematic) LGBT slant and exploration of gender.
