Listened to the audiobook and the multiple narrators helped with the perspective shifts between the characters. The book gains momentum throughout. Many of the character's endings are left unfinished, which keeps them endless in a way.

there there is a deftly crafted story involving several interwoven narratives that each have unique emotional heft.  the nodes at which these narratives interlock and intersect are, to me, the most interesting and compelling parts of the story; yet i also felt that the cast of characters was so large that it began to strain the pathos built up for any one character.  ultimately though, i enjoyed this novel and will be checking out orange’s new book, which i think is a prequel to this one.

This book is a beautiful, heartbreaking journey through the lives and struggles of several Native people as they converge on the Oakland powwow.

This story is about Native Americans living in Oakland where there will be a big powpow at the Coliseum.   It is a relatively short story but there are 12 characters which are probably too many for the length.  All are struggling either with substance abuse, violence or poverty.  Much of this comes from the struggle to keep their culture alive.  Parts were interesting but parts also fell very flat.  Ending seemed unfinished.
