I really liked this one, of mostly two reasons.

Because you heard more about the relationship between Fletcher and Gin - we've only seen it from Gin's point of view, so it was very insightful.

One of the reasons that the first book (Spider's Bite, re.) bothered me a bit, was because we heard almost nothing about Gin as a teenager. This short story really gave a sight of the younger Gin, even though it was from Fletcher's side of view.

This short is told from Fletcher's POV and covers Gin's first solo gig. I feel like the guilt was laid on a bit thick, but I can't argue that it was made clear Fletcher knew more about Gin's prior circumstances than anyone suspected:

This might be the Spider’s first solo job, but the Tin Man was going to look after his apprentice tonight.

Especially since I hadn’t managed to do that before, when Gin had really needed me.

There are spoilers for future installments in this one, so don't read it until after you've finished the fourth (fifth?) full novel (TANGLED THREADS).

But definitely read it. Gin is just as badass at sixteen as she is when we first meet her a dozen or so years later in SPIDER'S BITE.

This was a short story told from Fletcher Lane's point of view, detailing Gin Blanco's first solo kill as The Spider. Short stories can be hit or miss for me, and this one kinda missed for me. It was well written, but ultimately unnecessary. This could have been a recollection in [b:Spider's Bite|6611038|Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1)|Jennifer Estep|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1388707351s/6611038.jpg|6805023], rather than a seperate short story. We did get to see other characters in the Gin Blanco universe, and it was interesting to see the reasons behind the kill, but for me was a bit of a let down.

Series: Elemental Assassin #0.2
Rating: 3 stars - I liked it

A short scene told from Fletcher Lane’s perspective. It shows his protectiveness towards Gin while she completes her first solo assassination. It was great to see that he was proud of her and treated her like a daughter. I wish we had more Fletcher stories.

This story, told from Fletcher Lane's point-of-view, showed us Gin at 16, on her first solo job.

But what I found more fascinating were the hints Fletcher gave us about Gin's past. He apparently knew even then that
Mab Monroe was responsible for the deaths of Gin's mother and older sister. He also knew that Bria did not die and he hinted that he had some responsibility for the deaths!

If you read that spoiler, I hope you can understand my frustration that we weren't told any more.

Also, I don't agree with this story being #0.4 in the Elemental Assassin series. It really should be read after book two. Why? Because it wasn't until the end of book one that we learned that
Bria, Gin's younger sister, was still alive.
And it wasn't until book two that we learned that
Mab Monroe killed Gin's mother and older sister.

So I am very glad that I read this story after I read books one and two. :-)
