I fell in love with IDEO after reading the Art of Innovation and got really excited when a friend told me about IDEO's Eyes Open project for London and New York. Essentially, the Eyes Open books are aimed at allowing readers to experience these two cities in a new way; it's not about playing tourist and seeing the traditional sights like the Statue of Liberty and Times Square, but about uncovering hidden gems you might have otherwise passed by, seeing a more intimate, personal part of the city.

The book was put together in typical IDEO fashion - by soliciting opinions and views from a diverse group of individuals who had experienced or interacted with the product - in this case, New York and London - in some way. The team behind Eyes Wide Open solicited submissions for each city from the IDEO community, edited the list down to ninety submissions, then went out to experience these places themselves.

I'd checked out some of the spots like the Tenement Museum, the Natural History Museum, and Magnolia Bakery before. But Eyes Open New York unveiled other new treasures like the New York Earth Room at Wooster St (a quirky locale that I would otherwise have zipped by unwittingly) and Rice to Riches, both of which I checked out during my most recent trip to NYC.
