So underrated. ♥️
« Oblomov » is written in such a wonderful style that you almost feel physically the change of scenery when the story swings between Oblomov and Stolz, you almost smell the air in the Agafia Pshenitsina’s kitchen and taste of her dishes, you almost fall in love in the same manner as each of the characters does, you walk in the shoes of each of them despite the contrast of their visions and desires.
Strong women, men in love, comedy, love of life, dullness, idleness, ideals, friendship, worship. This classic has it all.

Oblomov își petrece majoritatea timpului stând culcat în casă, alături de servitorul său Zahar, într-o stare de apatie generală. Refuză sistematic invitațiile de a ieși în lume pe motiv că ar fi plictisitoare. Asemeni poveștii drobului de sare a lui Creangă, începe să se plângă când apar probleme ce trebuie rezolvate, dar nu face nimic în acea privință.
Astfel îl găsește Stolz, un vechi prieten din copilărie. Încearcă să-l scoată în lume și-i face cunoștință cu Olga, o prietenă dragă de-a lui. Oblomov se îndrăgostește de aceasta și, pentru o perioadă de timp, reușește să-și schimbe modul de viață. Idila dintre cei doi nu ține, între ei fiind o prăpastie sau un zid de netrecut.
Revine la vechile obiceiuri. Devine țintă ușoară șiretlicurilor celor care vor să profite de pe urma lui. Cu toate astea, Stolz mai crede că-l poate schimba. Îi scrie scrisori și îi face vizite. "Acum ori niciodată" repeta el.
Deși nu a înfăptuit multe lucruri, a lăsat o puternică impresie tuturor celor care l-au cunoscut:
"— Pentru ceea ce găseşti la el şi care e mai preţios decât orice inteligenţă: o inimă credincioasă şi cinstită! Este comoara cu care l-a înzestrat natura, şi Oblomov a ştiut s-o poarte neatinsă de-a lungul întregii vieţi. A primit lovituri, a căzut de multe ori, şi-a pierdut înflăcărarea şi, în cele din urmă, a adormit, distrus, dezamăgit, obosit de viaţă, dar nu şi-a pierdut cinstea şi firea credincioasă. Inima lui n-a scos niciodată o notă falsă; nicio murdărie nu s-a prins de el. Pe el nu-l poate încânta niciun fel de minciună împodobită, nimic nu-l poate ademeni pe o cale greşită; poate să clocotească în jurul lui un noian de răutate şi murdărie, o lume întreagă se poate otrăvi de rele şi întoarce pe dos, dar Oblomov nu se va închina niciodată idolului minciunii, sufletul lui va rămâne întotdeauna curat, luminos, cinstit… E un suflet limpede ca cristalul. Am cunoscut mulţi oameni plini de înalte însuşiri, dar niciodată n-am întâlnit un suflet mai curat, mai luminos şi mai simplu ca al lui; am ţinut la multă lume, dar la nimeni atât de adânc şi de trainic ca la Oblomov. Cine l-a cunoscut o dată, nu poate să nu-l iubească. Aşa e? Am ghicit?"

This book took me a long time to read, and it's not hard to see why, the slog this book puts you through really showcases Oblomov's state of mind! A snail would definitely win the race against this books pace, which laboriously languishes over peoples mental state for pages upon pages before going on to the next (very similar) reflections. Very nicely written, and probably relevant in the time period it was released, but it sure is a struggle for the average modern reader.

Oblomov (Обломов) van Ivan Gontsjarov uit 1859. Weinig boeken hebben mij zo gegrepen als dit boek. Allereerst omdat ik weinig boeken ken die zo mooi en soms bijna poëtisch geschreven zijn. Als tweede zijn er weinig boeken zo ontzettend herkenbaar als dit boek. In Oblomov worden we meegenomen met een jonge adelijke man van de familielijn Oblomov. Deze jonge man heeft alles wat hij nodig heeft en vind dit eigenlijk wel prima. Zijn eten word hem gebracht, zijn kleding word hem aangedaan en zijn geprijsde bed hoeft hij alleen te verlaten om over te stappen naar zijn sofa. Zo ziet het dagelijkse leven van Oblomov eruit. In het boek worden wij echter meegenomen naar de verschillende veranderingen die plaats vinden in zijn leven en hoe Oblomov hierop reageert, en zijn reactie is er bijna altijd een van angst en uitstel. Dit maakt het boek zo leuk en zo herkenbaar, iedereen herkent Oblomov en zijn gedragingen. Tegelijkertijd is het een sneu verhaal, waarin je als lezer geërgerd word als het Oblomov weer niet lukt zijn leven bij een te krijgen, hoe graag je het hem ook gunt.

Good representation of depression, but I give it two stars because I personally couldn't deal with it. I tried, but I just couldn't finish it. As someone who has been depressed, I felt that this was reminding me how bad it was. Oblomov wants to do things, but he can't! He can't even bring himself to clean his room (or order somebody else to do it). He can't bring himself to do things that are very important, that pertain to his livelihood and the possibility of love. There are other books that deal with more difficult like war, violence, abuse &c, but this one has been among the most difficult for me.

Wish I had researched translations before and not chosen Hogarth's, which is extremely abridged and apparently leaves out many important details. Lesson learned...Still enjoyed the prose and story, even if it's not very faithful to the original. Will have to revisit through a different translation someday
