The authors know their subject, but keep it light. Because it is mostly biography, with some explanations of the major works at the end, the illustrations not only fit, they add something to the text. It also succeeds in wetting the appetite for more [a:James Joyce|5144|James Joyce|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1358276521p2/5144.jpg]. Like most people who have tried to read [b:Ulysses|338798|Ulysses|James Joyce|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1346161221s/338798.jpg|2368224] I have given up. I've given up on it more than once. But Joyce is just such a mean bastard, I can't help but be attracted to his novels. A yid in Dublin, no less. And there is a chapter in a library that corresponds to the Scylla and Charybdis? Yeah, some day. In the mean time, there are plenty of other delicious Irish authors to read, and for most of them, you don't need a skeleton key or annotations.

Very brief introduction to Joyce, with interesting graphics (see the comments section on FB for this post) giving basic but insightful perspective on Joyce's life. Didn't read anything new here, but enjoyed the selected passages. For someone just beginning Joyce, this would be the lightest weight introduction you are likely to find.
