Bad ... Just bad

This is definitely not a detective novel, as there is nothing for you to figure out. There are no clues, only the detective 'discovering' what you, the reader, already knew.

This is not an adventure novel, because nothing truly adventurous happens. Oh, yeah, there are brawls and chases, but it is all done highhandedly, that there is no joy in reading about them - I made it to beyond 50%, but quit, because 'her heart felt like it was squashed between two blocks of ice' and she 'hid her lovely face'.

Sorry, but a few chapters ago, you said that she was not a lovely woman, just above average, but no biggy. This is like reading an SNL caper making fun of the old black and white films. Bad dialog, bad characters, unbelievable plot line, and boring.

I have absolutely no desire to read another word of this trite and convoluted novel.

Also, naming a character in the book after yourself, and calling the character clever, does NOT in turn make you clever as well.

I started this series looking for some good books about Jack the Ripper and I found "The Cutthroat" which turned out to be book 10 in the Isaac Bell series. After liking and finishing that book I decided to read the series. I enjoyed most of the chase and am now working on The Wrecker however the more I read the more trouble I have rooting for the protagonist Isaac Bell. He is the best at everything. He is rich. He gets the perfect girl. He always has the perfect hunches. He is "perfect". I personally find it very very hard to root for or really care about a protagonist like that. It really annoys me and takes away from my enjoyment of the books. I am hoping this changes as the series goes on because I enjoy the time period and ideas of the books so far but I don't know if I'll go through the whole series if it just continues to be about perfect Isaac.

Final note. The editor sure could have convinced Cussler to cut some more of the book out. Having a full page (several times) just describing someone starting a car got pretty old pretty quick.

My husband reads Clive Cussler (Dirk Pitt) books so I picked up this CD set (not Dirk Pitt) at a library sale. We listened to it on a recent long road trip. It was a good story with a nice narrator. Nice the way the author weaves in historical events.

Plot was ok. Characters were ok. Dialogue was embarrassingly poorly written.

I really enjoyed this book. I think I enjoyed it far more than the NUMA books, actually. There are some parts in the story that are a little stretched on fact but yes, I will grant artistic license there and Cussler handled it well. His treatment of male-female romantic relationships continue to amuse me. They are very sudden, and some might say abrupt. I cannot help but compare and contrast it with how someone with a more feminine perspective might approach romantic development.

A highly enjoyable read, nevertheless.

Clive, you let me down. Normally I love your stuff, but this one couldn't hold me for 100 pages.
