This was a cover buy for me and I did not realize how historical it was. Historical fantasies set in our world are a really hard genre for me to read. On top of it being YA and how I’m just not reading from that group as much, I feel like I set myself up for failure with this one.

It's very interesting to learn about African religion and culture, but that doesn't compensate for how wonky the plot is. The characters don't change, there is no chemistry between them and there are evitable loses in the story. The ending was kinda ok, though.
