There is a lot of symbolism but I couldn't relate much. It's not a bad book or bad writing but it's just not my cup of tea. Maybe I'll give it a second chance when I can be more patient.

I read Melissa Broder’s novels, The Pisces and Milk Fed. I enjoy her fiction writing style and wanted to experience her poetic voice. I picked up her poetry collection, Meat Heart to get a sense of Broder as a poet. Her poetry is much like her fiction – straight forward, no topic off limits, sexual and doesn’t mind using taboo words. Through her poetry, she reflects on life, death, silence, God and other musings. Broder’s poetic style in this collection innovatively uses imagery and metaphors.
This poetry collection is best for those who enjoy poets who play with words and imagery.

If you want to read a book that stretches boundaries and challenges the world of poetry then you should read Meat Heart. It states what would normally be a taboo. It can make you slightly uncomfortable by using sexually explicit content that is a little unusual. It combines different themes like violence, sex, nature, and religion that Melissa Broder uses together to create a unique picture. It makes you reread the poems and question your own judgement. It really captures you and makes puts you in a different world. It takes you on a rollercoaster of different emotions than other poetry makes you feel. Melissa Broder writes about anything and everything, and has no boundaries.

This is the third Broder book I've read, and I've really liked all of them. Her viewpoint is so different from mine, but the lines are direct and honest and wry, which connects.
