The Gold Coast by Nelson DeMille

A prime example of why some books are best left in the past as well as certain writing styles. It beggars belief that some people can think of this as one of their all time favorite books. I only kept reading (the chapters that I did) as I could only believe it was going to get better. It did not. Realize life is short and read something else.

I DNFd this. But didn’t rate it. Maybe someday I’ll be in the mood and will try again, because it was very clever. I enjoyed the snarky satire and the depiction of the lifestyles of the super rich. But I’m at 40 % and so far haven’t really detected a plot, and good writing can only keep me interested for so long.

I have really enjoyed DeMille’s John Corey series. I did enjoy this book as well, though it is much slower paced, and the misogyny/racism runs rampant. I will say, it is seemingly to develop the protagonist who is meant to be a haughty blue blood of Long Island. Sometimes I found it cringy. The way he paints the picture of his Mafia Don, however, is unique and poignant. The ending is somewhat surprising without really being a twist.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. John Sutter is a successful lawyer married to a Long Island heiress. But he is as WASP as they come and his dull life is lacking a bit of spark. Into his midlife crisis enters his new neighbor, Mafia Don Frank Bellarosa. At first John resists Frank's overtures to be friendly neighbors but eventually the perceived romance of the Mafia Boss's secret life proves too great a lure. Everything John holds dear and sacred is now in the crosshairs as his life begins to irrevocably change in ways he could never foresee.

Actually only read about 1/3 of this book! I could not get into it. I love his John Corey series and his stand alone books, but there didn't seem to be much of a story line in this one; at for me. Too many other books out there to read/listen to.
