Eh...to be honest, I wasn't really taken with any of this. I haven't read "UFF Annual #2" featuring the return of the Moleman (I'll get to that in 'Ultimate Annuals 2') but the arcs "Godwar" and "Devils" were snoozerific. The first, because of the barrage of characters I didn't know about who did the typical 'treat the heroes like enemies because of a misunderstanding' thing before they all figured out there was a real villain around: Thanos.

I liked the little references to the Brood (Thanos' starship is an enslaved Acanti [red space whale thing] and "gene-stripping"), but, otherwise, was unimpressed. Another case of blunt repeating of what happened in the main continuity.

Second, "Devils" was garbled and rushed. "Bahahaha Fantastic Four, I have defeated you! Oh wait we're two pages away from the finale and I'm suddenly vanquished by someone else entirely!" So....Unsatisfying.

What kept the book afloat at all was the little bits of humor (situational and verbal) that Carey put in, and the visuals were good. Carey's contributions, I suspect, were just piggybacked on top of what other writers had already put into the series.

Addendum: "Ultimate Fantastic Four Annual #2" was awesome. I don't know how Carey managed to write a decent story here without boringing it up the way he has everything else in this volume. Funny how things work out.
