The main relationship in this book is very heavily represented as dominant (violent) male/submissive female which is not uncommon in books of this time but it’s very extreme here. So just be mindful if you do not like reading about this kind of relationship.

Entertaining. So many unsolicited marriage proposals. Set partly in South Africa and there is casual racism which is taken for granted as a natural attitude for the characters to have, but was uncomfortable to read in 2024.

Casual racism should be expected in an older book, but it nearly made me stop reading it. Yes, product of the times and maybe the characters were written that way so that they weren’t likable… I’m not sure, but I did finish the book because I wanted to find out how it all ended.
