4.6 * an excellent novel . Great storyline and unputdownable. Totally unexpected ending. An insight into the life of surgeons working in poor conditions in Ethiopia and the poor part of NYC. It's an uplifting story.

I REALLY wanted to finish this book. I got about 500 pages in and it just wasn't engaging enough. Maybe it's because I was listening to the audiobook, but I just couldn't handle it anymore. Maybe one day, I'll try again...

Gets 5 stars because it's just a beautifully written book.

It's not a quick read, and it could be called a dense read, because the descriptions are thick and detailed. But every tangent the author goes down in the beginning? You come back around to all of them by the end. All of them, from the most minor of characters in Ethiopia to the narrator's present life in the U.S.

From the book cover: Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon at a mission hospital is Addis Ababa.

Read this book when you have time to savor it. You'll miss a lot if you rush it. The words are worth the time it takes to read them.
