Disappointed with both Books 2 and 3 after a promising start with Book 1. Far too much of the book (and Book 2) spent in reminiscing of teenage years with the sudden appearance of a new character, Whistler in Book 3. Despite Whistler being such a close friend of Fin in his teenage years he didn't rate a mention in Book 2 ?? And enough of randy teenage memories too !! Surely Fin's 15 years as a policeman could've provided more interesting back stories ??

Third of the trilogy. All of which I loved. The main plot driver is not who did it, until not until the latter part of the book but it is very character driven, with fascinating interludes (in this book the tragic story of the Iolaire. I agree however with some criticism that, if May intended to keep this to a trilogy the lack of a resolution of his relationship with Marsaili, the circumstances of his son's death seemed simply a mopping up operation. However these are technical criticisms. I really enjoyed the set.

Thought this book was another fine example of Peter's exquisite writing. The story is set in present time but makes use of flashbacks which explain the characters past which puts them in their present position. All characters are well rounded and the descriptions of the landscape and the small world they inhabit and which they are all trying to escape, but are all being dragged back to as the secrets of their pasts come to the surface and continue to haunt and destroy their present. All and all a satisfying conclusion to this trilogy. Buyit and the other two. You wont regret it!

An interesting story but it unfolded ver slowly. The history of the characters was very important to the story, but a bit of a slog to get through. Pace increased quickly near the end.

No character progression and a bit of a damp squib as far as the main plot goes. I really struggled to finish this one. I don't understand the thinking behind concluding book 2's events at the very end of book 3, and in such an abrupt manner. The conclusion to MacLeod's son's story was added as an afterthought and also abruptly and poorly handled. Really disappointed.

If you don't know Gaelic I recommend the audiobook. It definitely sets the mood hearing a Scottish accent.
