At first I wanted to give it 5 stars, but I feel like it ended so suddenly, I wanted the ending to be a bit more descriptive and precise. This ending feels a bit empty for me. But otherwise I loved the book, it is so beautifully written and I love how the East and West meat and it js written in a common point of view showing the different cultures but highlighting a shared experience and therefore showing a unity. The plot is absolutely amazing how fiction meats the real word, talking about very real and recent issues. Overall its an amazing book, but because of the lack of real conclusion and real solution at the end I give it 4 stars. And let me be clear, my issue with the ending is that it is neither open enden nor closes/ solved and this weird ambigous ending is not really my cup of tea.

Nothing happens, and the politics of this narrator are highly problematic.

Deftly combines magical realism, history, science, and legend. Gun Island had me on the edge of my seat like a thriller but its beautiful prose and profound themes were that of a literary novel. Ghosh tackles the relationship between humans and nature, between our shared past, present, and future with subtlety and grace. I think often dark academia-esque novels or novels about historical mysteries are turned decidedly toward the past. But to me this book was fantastic because it had a conscience, a consciousness of how themes of bondage and climate change are just as relevant to human experience today as they were centuries ago. It is not only a sublime book, but also a call to action.
